WebClip2Go Implement Hybrid Teaching System in Belgium
Teachers at Hogeschool Vives to create both lecture and webinar videos
Veenendaal, The Netherlands _ 14 March, 2022
WebClip2Go have again proved the versatility of their unique approach to video production with the deployment of a dual purpose system for Hogeschool Vives in Kortrijk, Belgium. The system facilitates both ‘to camera’ presentation deliveries, as well as live, studio-based webinar or ‘talk show’ productions: all capable of being undertaken in the same low-footprint space using a crewless set-up.
Over the course of the last two years, like many educational institutions, Hogeschool Vives’ IT department has been overwhelmed with requests from teaching staff to help them produce videos, webinars and live-streamed video conferencing in order to meet the demands of remote teaching. This proved to be simply too much of a strain on both equipment and manpower/IT support resources, and so the school sought out WebClip2go to find out how their proven crewless video production system could reduce the burden on both teachers and the IT department alike. In particular, they sought a system that could facilitate both group productions – in the form of webinars and talk shows, as well as individual ‘to camera’ presentation of lessons by tutors.
The result was a hybrid Live Switching/PowerPoint configuration. The core of the system is based upon WebClip2Go’s PowerPoint configuration. With this, a number of pre-set templates are created for each teacher – using their preferred style and aesthetic. Teachers are then able to load these templates with content through PowerPoint, using pre-programmed PowerPoint slides to trigger transitions, effects, videos and additions as needed. The script is also written in the notes function. From here, the teacher needs only enter the studio and the script is delivered to the teleprompter, whilst the PowerPoint is automatically integrated into the production as part of a chromakeyed background – allowing the presenter to appear anywhere on screen, as required. The presenter is able to control the flow of the production from where they stand with no need for an additional crew, and the output is rendered in real time, meaning the video is ready to roll as soon as the presenter has finished their take, with no need for a time-consuming post-edit process.
The additional live-switching component that Hogeschool Vives purchased makes use of the same studio space and equipment, but simply requires a different configuration. The cameras are moved to point towards a talk show-style setup, and instead of using pre-programmed PowerPoint slides to facilitate transitions, these elements are programmed into a StreamDeck® panel which can be controlled in real time by the presenter (or any third party); facilitating camera switching, titles, transitions, effects, VTs and more. Again, the output is rendered in real-time – creating a full, live, professional standard talk-show without the need for a crew or post-edit (though additional ISO outputs from each camera are also recorded to allow for quick fixes and future editing if required).
Speaking of the installation, WebClip2Go CEO Gerrit Bulten said: “Both workflows represent an entirely novel approach to video production; reducing the need for manpower, space, expensive editing equipment or broadcast know-how, and therefore democratising concepts of video production – an especially important point for schools and universities who are increasingly required to find novel ways to improve the educational experience for their students (especially on a remote basis), whilst still working within carefully controlled budgets”.
“Moreover”, he continued, “the WebClip2Go approach is significantly more efficient and expedient: by front-loading and automating the editing process and allowing for real-time rendering, videos are created in no more than the time it takes to write the script and record to camera, and with only 15 minutes of initial training. This allows teachers to create substantial quantities of professional quality, reusable content without impacting upon their schedule”.
Speaking of the impact that WebClip2Go has had on teaching at Vives Hogeschool, Koen Pauwels head of AV integration said: “WebClip2Go is really quite remarkable; not just in terms of its flexibility, but in the level of professionalism that the final outputs have – all of the features contribute to an incredibly high-level production, whether as a lecture or a live discussion. But at the same time, they’re all very easy to pick up; our teachers enjoy using it and our IT department are very happy indeed that the level of support they need to give has been reduced to a minimum. Not to mention the overall improvement of learning experience for students”.
